Series Description

Water Rats was a 30 minute Australian crime action series on Channel Nine about an amazing group of seventy police Constables and detectives who solved crimes in Sydney Harbour and offshore. They patrol in boats rather than squad cars but the criminals are pretty much the same as any others.

Water Rats Trivia

On the first episodes of Water Rats real-life morgues were used as filming locations but later they erected a set on Goat Island.

On Water Rats the Water Police headquarters was fictionally located on Goat Island but in real life it was at Pyrmont.

Underwater filming is typically done in huge tanks of water but on Water Rats it was done in Sydney Harbour and off-shore. Other scenes were shot at the Australian Army Artillery Museum, Fort Denison, The Gap, Long Bay Correctional Centre, Middle Harbour, the Middle Head Fortifications, North Head, The Rocks, Shark Island and the White Power Station. In the second season Frank and Rachel also went to Melbourne for a murder case.

Water Rats won 1 AFI (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) Award, 3 Logie Awards, 1 People's Choice Award and 3 Awgie (Australian Writers' Guild) Awards!

The Water Police didn't have their own jail cells so they had to take prisoners to the Sydney Police Centre.

When Water Rats was released on Dvd many fans who purchased them were confused. Initially, two sets were released and titled, "Series 1" and Series 2". Series 1 was actually just the first half of the first season and series 2 was the second half. Then the second season was released as "Series 3", etc.

The outside of Frank's house was shot near the Agar Steps in The Rocks but the inside of the house was filmed on Goat Island.

The third season of Water Rats was supposed to have 32 episodes but due to Colin Friels' struggle against pancreatic cancer only 31 were produced. Thankfully, Colin was able to go into total remission and is still entertaining audiences to this day! (2011)
