Martin Milner .... Tod Stiles Route 66 Trivia
The obvious choice for a Route 66 theme song would have been the Bobby Troup song titled, "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" but CBS didn't care to pay royalties so they hired Nelson Riddle to write an instrumental theme for the series.
Route 66 was most likely at least partially inspired by a Canadian series that aired the previous season titled, "Cannonball".
Even though the series was called Route 66, there were some episodes that weren't based along that highway. Episode #95, "Same Picture, Different Frame", was shot in Maine and episode #96, "Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are" was filmed in Vermont. Glenn Corbett has said that none of the episodes he appeared in were along Route 66. He said that they told him the scenery wasn't exciting enough!
George Maharis quit Route 66 during season four. He did become ill with hepatitis during that time but it was common knowledge at the time that he just used that as an excuse to get out of his contract. He had actually been unhappy for quite a while with the terms of his contract and he had many run-ins with Martin Milner and the Route 66 producers.
Episode #68, "Lizard's Leg and Owlet's Wing" was a real treat for horror fans! Boris Karloff ("Thriller"), Lon Chaney Jr. ("Pistols 'N' Petticoats") and Peter Lorre all guest-starred on that episode and both Karloff and Chaney wore their famed Frankenstein Monster and Wolf Man make-up for the first time in many years.
