Series Description

To the Manor Born was a 30 minute British romantic comedy series on BBC-1 about a woman named Audry who is forced for financial reasons to sell her beloved Grantleigh Manor estate that had been in her family for generations when her husband suddenly passed away. She sold the manor to the wealthy owner of a large chain of supermarkets named Richard De Vere and purchased an Old Lodge next door. Before too long a budding romance began to grow between Audrey and Richard.

The final episode of To the Manor Born held the record for the largest viewing audience on British television for 15 years with more than 27 million tuning in. In 1996 an episode of the series, "Only Fools and Horses..." took first place but only by a few hundred thousand viewers!

Grantleigh Manor, in real life, belonged to the father-in-law of series creator Peter Spence.. It's located in Cricket St. Thomas, in Somerset and is now part of a country hotel with its own wildlife park. Audrey's lodge in real life is actually several miles distant from the Manor instead of nearby as it appeared on the To the Manor Born.
