Elliott Gould .... David Randall (Episodes 1-6) Together We Stand Trivia
There were six episodes of Together We Stand that were produced but were not broadcast. Their titles were: "Girls' Night In", "Little Miracle", "Jack's Altar Ego", "Against All Odds", "My Mentor", and "I Never Dance with Mother".
The storylines throughout Together We Stand's run centered on the challenges of a multi-racial family. David and Lori first adopted a white girl after being told that they would never be able to have children of their own. Then Lori became pregnant and their "miracle" child Jack made child number two. After that, an aggressive social worker talked them into adopting Sam, a teenaged boy of Asian descent and Sally, a six-year-old adorable little black girl.
Together We Stand never really got a chance to succeed. Its first two episodes aired on Monday night at 8:30PM against the huge ABC hit series, "MacGyver". Then it was moved to Wednesday at 8:00PM where it was up against "Perfect Strangers" on ABC and another blockbuster series, "Highway to Heaven" on NBC! It ran there for three episodes during which it was moved from 8:30 to 9:00PM. Then it got pre-empted and was totally off the air for one week. It was only broadcast one more week after that and then it disappeared for over three months! The last seven episodes aired with yet one more pre-emption! CBS might just as well have named the series, "Where Did We Go"!
To be fair to the CBS executives, Elliot Gould did leave the show after its sixth episode. He was the only "big name" draw and he was the main focus of the series. When Together We Stand returned three months later, the title was changed to "Nothing is Easy". It was explained that Elliot's character (David) had been killed in an car accident. The storylines mostly focused on Lori's struggle to keep her still large family together without their former bread-winner. Lori went back to work while also going back to school so she would eventually qualify for a better-paying job. That plus raising her four kids was very demanding. So demanding, in fact, that Lori also had to constantly convince the adoption agency that she should be able to keep her three adoptees!
