Tom Hanks .... Narrator The Pacific Miniseries Trivia
There was originally a proposed budget of $100 million to produce the miniseries but as with many projects of this magnitude it grew to $150 million. It is likely the most expensive production ever made in Australia.
The Pacific miniseries was mostly based on four memoirs by three authors who were Marines who took part in the action in the Pacific. The memoirs are titled, "With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa" and "China Marine" by Eugene Sledge, "Helmet for My Pillow" by Robert Leckie, and "Red Blood, Black Sand" by Chuck Tatum.
The Pacific was nominated for 24 Emmy Awards in 2010 and won 9 of them including "Best Miniseries or TV Movie"! It was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for "Best Miniseries or TV Movie" but lost that one to "Carlos", a miniseries about a raid on the 1975 OPEC meeting that was orchestrated by Venezuelan revolutionary leader Ilich Ramirez Sanchez who became the leader of a worldwide terrorist organization.
Critics overwhelmingly loved the Pacific for its stark realism, terrific acting and amazing special effects. Man World War II veterans swore that it was so realistic that they felt like they were back in the battle while watching.
It's not hard to believe that the series was so realistic once you realize that there were approximately 60 staff members who worked on special effects alone and the story was based on memoirs of soldiers who had actually fought in the battles.
Of course, it also didn't hurt that there were a whopping 19 producers ensuring that the project was done correctly including executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg! Add to that the assets of three production companies: HBO films, Playtone, and Dreamworks and it's hard to imagine how the project could have turned out to be anything less than amazing!
