Ricky Gervais .... David Brent The Office UK Trivia
The Office UK version started from a project that Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais filmed at a University. It was a documentary-style short that Stephen hoped he could use to get a job with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The BBC was so impressed that they decided to develop the basic idea into a TV series and budgeted 90.000 pounds for the pilot!
This UK series was not filmed in a studio. It was shot at the office building next to Teddington Studios.
Before becoming an actor/comedian, Ricky Gervais was a Disc Jockey on London's XFM radio station, managed bands, and was in a musical group called "Seona Dancing" who released two singles but neither of them hit the charts.
The Office UK was the very first sitcom from Britain to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award in more than 25 years ... and the first to ever win!
Donna's parents, "Ron" and "Elaine" were named after Stephen Merchant's parents. If you've watched the Office, you've probably seen Stephen's dad. He's the office cleaner who looks into the camera while standing still!
The scene in which Brent gave Tim the appraisal required 74 takes to get it right!
Mackenzie Crook worked as a stand-up comic for 10 years before landing his role on The Office. He also did other jobs to "pay the rent" including: working in a chicken factory and at Pizza Hut! Mackenzie's home in Muswell Hill, North London once belonged to Peter Sellers.
