Series Description The Ocean Girl TV show was a 30 minute Australian family sci-fi series that aired on ATV-10 in Australia and on the Disney Channel in the U.S. It was set in the near future and was about a girl named Neri who lived alone on a deserted island, could talk to Whales, had super-strength and was able to breath underwater. Neri made friends with two boys who lived in an underwater research facility that is occupied by hundreds of people. Most of the stories took place there and concentrated on the lives of the people who lived there and their curiousity about Neri's origins. Ocean Girl Cast
Marzena Godecki .... Neri (Ocean Girl) Ocean Girl Trivia
Neri's name was short for "Nerida" which means " Sea Nymph" in Greek.
The underwater research facility on Ocean Girl was called ORCA which was an acronym for "Oceanic Research Centre of Australia". It was located off the coast of Australia and looked like a huge representation of an Atom.
In the first episodes of Ocean Girl, Neri's friendship with Jason and Brett Bates was kept "top secret" because Neri was afraid of how the other humans might treat her.
Marzena Godecki got the role as Neri from over 500 girls who auditioned for the part! She had to take numerous swimming and diving lessons in order to prepare for the role.
For some reason, Ocean Girl was renamed "Ocean Odyssey" for broadcast in the United Kingdom.
In the scenes where Neri was seen up close with her whale friend, a prop was used that weighed over 1500 pounds and was made of aluminum and fiberglass!
At first, Neri had no idea where she came from or how she got her abilities. She eventually discovered that she was from another planet called, "The Planet of the Oceans". Her father had come with her on a mission to save both their planet and the Earth. Dad died soon after landing, however, and Neri was on her own ... except that she then discovered that she also had a sister named Mera! Apparently, Neri was too young when she came to Earth to remember her sister.
Most of those discoveries aired during the fourth and final season of the Ocean Girl TV show. That really upset U.S. audiences as the Disney Channel decided to only air the first three seasons, leaving American fans with an unresolved plotline.
Ocean Girl was the inspiration for an animated series titled, "The New Adventures of Ocean Girl" that aired in 2000/2001.
Ocean Girl won a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Children's Award in 1998 for "Best International Children's Series".
