Series Description
The Mister Ed TV show was a 30 minute comedy series on CBS about a young architect and his wife who moved to the countryside to be closer to nature. Along with the home they purchased came a horse that could talk. Unfortunately for Wilbur Post, Mister Ed would only talk to him! Wilbur would constantly get blamed for things that Mister Ed did such as saying something bad about someone else when Wilbur was the only other "human" nearby. The offended party would assume that Wilbur said it. Mister Ed would sometimes make telephone calls, identifying himself as Wilbur. Wilbur's only defense would be to say, "My Horse did it"! So he either had to take the blame or end out in a mental institution!

Mister Ed Trivia
When Wilbur asked Mister Ed why he had never spoken to anyone else, Mister Ed said that Wilbur was the only human being he'd ever met that was worth talking to!
Allan "Rocky" Lane, who supplied Mister Ed's voice, was a retired actor when this series began. He had starred in numerous low-budget westerns during the 1940s.
Mister Ed actually began as a syndicated series. It was so popular with viewers that CBS picked it up for their prime time line-up. Typically, shows that air both syndicated and prime-time happen in the opposite order. They're prime time first and if the ratings drop too low for the networks but still have a "following", they may continue in production for syndication.
Wilbur and Carol Post had to get new neighbors in 1963 after Larry Keating died shortly after the beginning of the season.
Did you ever wonder how they got Mr. Ed to move his lips so that it appeared as if he was speaking? Today they would probably use computers for the effect but that would have required a multi-million dollar computer back in the early 1960s so they had to find another way. They put peanut butter on the horse's gums! What appeared to be speaking was actually Mr. Ed trying to work the peanut butter off his gums so he could swallow it!
Theme Song
Title: Mister Ed
By: Ray Evans and Jay Livingston
A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And no one can talk to a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister Ed.
Go right to the source and ask the horse
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse.
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mister Ed.
People yakkity yak a streak and waste your time of day
But Mister Ed will never speak unless he has something to say.
A horse is a horse, of course, of course,
And this one'll talk 'til his voice is hoarse.
You never heard of a talking horse?
Well listen to this.
I am Mister Ed.
