TV Spin-Offs Definition:

A TV series is considered to be a "Spin-off" where one or more of the regular characters were taken from the cast of a previous series. So, to use a well-known example, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was a spin-off of Star Trek: The Next Generation because two characters (Worf and Chief O'Brien) appeared REGULARLY on Deep Space Nine. The Next Generation and Voyager both had appearances by characters from previous Star Trek characters but the did not become REGULAR cast members and, therefore, those series are not considered to be spin-Offs.

A series is considered to be a spin-off if the characters were not regulars on the previous series, as long as they are regulars on the new series. In those cases, we have noted the series with an asterick (*). This was often purposely done by the networks in order to promote a new show from an existing popular show. In some cases, a guest-starring character was so popular that they network is deluged with fan mail and, therefore, decides to create a series around that character (as in the case of Robin Williams fan mail for his appearance on "Happy Days" as "Mork" resulting in the production of "Mork and Mindy".

The character need not be portrayed by the same actor/actress on both series to be considered a spin-off (as in the case of Bewitched/Tabitha and M*A*S*H/Trapper John, M.D.).
