The Lineup Trivia
There was a "The Lineup Radio Show" that aired from 1950-1953 on CBS radio that, due to its popularity, inspired this TV series. There can be little doubt that both series owe their production to the huge ratings success of NBC's "Dragnet Radio Show" and "Dragnet TV Show"! Audiences of the day apparently loved partner police shows just as much as we do today!
The TV version of The Lineup was very similar but not identical to the radio version. The crime fighting partners on the radio version were Bill Johnstone (who played "The Shadow" on the radio) and Wally Maher. Rather than in San Francisco, the radio show took place in an unnamed city only referred to as the "great American city". The character Matt Greb was a Detective Sergeant on the radio show but had to be changed to an Inspector for the TV show because of the fact that in the mid 1950s, the San Francisco Police Department's Bureau of Inspectors had no such rank as Detective Sergeant.
Warner Anderson and Tom Tully were not total strangers when they were cast on The Lineup. Eleven years earlier they starred in the 1943 movie, "Destination Tokyo"!
The Lineup was produced at Desilu Studios run by famed comedienne Lucille Ball and her husband/Cuban band leader Desi Arnaz who co-starred on the classic hit comedy series, "I Love Lucy". You might be surprised to know that Lucille and Desi also produced the hit series, "Star Trek" and "Mission Impossible" among others!
Tom Tully left the series after season 5. In a scramble to find a partner for Detective Guthrie, a series of actors were hired to fill the role. In all cases, the new actors were much younger than Tully and the relationship between the two crime fighting partners never quite reached the appeal of the original.
After the Lineup was canceled, reruns ran in syndication under the title, "San Francisco Beat".
