Series Description
The Kraft Television Theatre was a 60 minute anthology drama series that aired live on NBC. While most of the episodes were dramas, a few comedies were thrown in for good measure. The storylines concentrated on subjects that middle-class families could relate to and included many of the most popular stars of the day. The series was critically acclaimed, brought entertainment to middle-class America that had previously been available only in Theaters or on Broadway, and also sold lots of Kraft products!

Kraft Television Theatre Trivia
In April of 1958, the title of this series was changed to "Kraft Theatre". Just two months later in June, it was changed again to "Kraft Mystery Theatre".
Due to the Kraft Television Theatre being broadcast live, there are only a few episodes that were filmed for later broadcast that have been preserved for posterity.
The Kraft Television Theatre was so popular and so well funded by Kraft that it aired on both ABC and NBC (but on different nights) during the Fall 1953 and Fall 1954 seasons! Kraft was doing so well with their advertising of their regular products that they wanted another series (which would carry the same name) to advertise their new spreadable cheese product called, "Cheese Whiz"! The new night didn't do as well as needed to justify its $2 million cost, however, so it only lasted 1 1/2 seasons.
Many in the TV industry were shocked that Kraft would want to sponsor the second night of the Kraft Television Theatre which was not a huge ratings success. Kraft, however, never cared as much about ratings as they did about recipe requests and product sales. If increased sales exceeded production costs, they were happy!
Kraft, in fact, blantantly admited the fact that their goal was to move product. They provided a quality program simply as a way to attract viewers for their commercials which were pure genius! There were typically two-2 minute commercials which would show a woman's hands preparing a meal using Kraft products. The announcer would narrate the recipe directions while the recipe was prepared. Kraft sales soared beyond their wildest dreams!
The best-known episode of the Kraft Television Theatre was broadcast on January 1, 1955. The script for it was written by Rod Serling who would go on to create "The Twilight Zone" and "Night Gallery". Serling won an Emmy for "Patterns". It got such a huge response from viewers that it was re-broadcast a few weeks later! It also was made into a feature film that was also titled, "Patterns"!
After the Kraft Television Theatre ended, TV Guide did a "tribute" article about the series. The article stated that the series had aired more than 650 plays that were chosen from 18,845 scripts! The rehearsals for the 6,750 roles took 26,000 hours on 5,236 sets! The first play had cost $3,000 to produce and the last cost $165,000!
The Kraft Television Theatre didn't take summers off (or worse) like the shows of today. It aired pretty much twelve months out of the year for its entire run!
Kraft continued to sponser TV shows after the Kraft Television Theatre ended but they switched from dramatic anthology series to musicals.
