Hunter

Hunter Cast

Series Description

The Hunter TV show was a 60 minute crime drama series on NBC about a male and a female police detective who worked together investigating robberies, rapes, cons, and murders on the streets of Los Angeles, California. Detective Sergeant Rick Hunter was the kind of cop who really cared about getting the slimebags off the streets but often bent the rules to the extreme in order to catch them. This made him less than loved on the force, especially by his superior officers. Oh yeah ... some of his family members were crooks too! Detective Hunter went through one partner after another until meeting Detective Sergeant Dee Dee McCall.

Hunter Trivia

Fred Dryer's role as L.A.P.D. Detective Sergeant Rick Hunter has often been compared to the Clint Eastwood ("Rawhide") role of "Dirty Harry". Both characters had nothing but contempt for the scumbags that they pursued. They both, therefore, had no problem breaking police procedures when apprehending them or questioning them.

The Hunter TV show was nearly canceled after its first season. CBS was airing the hit series, "Dallas" in Hunter's time slot and many viewers were turned off by the overt violence on the show during the first season. After episode #13, "Avenging Angel", Hunter was taken off the air but NBC President, "Brandon Tartikoff" felt the series had potential and a few months later he put the series back on the air on Saturday nights at 10PM when the competition on the other networks was pretty meager and Hunter slowly went up in the rankings. Hunter's time slot would be changed a total of twelve times during its seven season run!

Catchphrases have often been known to boost a show's viewership. During the first season, Rick Hunter would often say, "Works for me", sometimes several times per episode. "Works for me" did become a very popular phrase used by the public but its hard to say how much that really helped viewership.

Hunter had an opening theme song that was written by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter. There were no lyrics but at the end of the music Hunter said, "Works for me"!

For the second season, the violence on the show was toned down as was Hunter's treatment of criminals. The antagonism between Hunter and his superiors was also deminished and references to Hunter's criminal relatives were much less often heard. Hunter and McCall moved most of their cases from the undesireable areas of L.A. to the more upscale areas. The chemistry between them also became a much bigger part of the storyline. While Hunter ended the first season in 79th place in the Nielsen ratings, by the end of the second season, it had jumped to #38! Season 3 ended in 25th place, season 4 in 18th place, and season 5 in 17th place!

If you didn't watch Hunter, you might still remember James Whitmore Jr. (Sergeant Terwilliger) as Captain James Gutterman on the series, "Baa Baa Black Sheep". James actually had a directing career that rivaled his acting career. He has directed actor Scott Bakula in episodes of "Quantum Leap", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", and the 2001 Star Trek series, "Enterprise". His father is James Whitmore Sr. who is one of the greatest actors of all time with more than 100 movie roles and dozens of TV appearances from 1949 to today!

Hunter's badge number was #89.

It's amazing how many people who watched "Saturday Night Live" in its early years say that Garrett Morris just disappeared from show business. That couldn't be further from the truth! Besides his 5-year-run on that series and his 3 years on Hunter, Garrett also starred on the "Jamie Foxx Show" for five years! And that's not counting the multitude of theatrical movie, TV movie, and TV series guest starring roles he's had!
