Jane Seymour .... Michaela Quinn Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman Trivia:
There wasn't initially a lot of confidence that Dr. Quinn would be successful. The pilot was produced as a 2 hour TV movie in case ratings were poor. In an almost seemingly effort to make the show fail, the pilot movie was broadcast on New Year's day in the same time slot as the Orange Bowl! Critics trashed the pilot and forecasted its demise but ratings were impressive. The audience loved the show and CBS ordered the first season of episodes!
Jane Seymour got the script for the pilot just one day before production began! She was told to read it and immediately decide whether to take the role as Michaela Quinn! She said that the script brought tears to her eyes and there was no doubt that she wanted to be a part of the production. The following day she found herself being fit for costumes!
Richard Chamberlain is often referred to as "King of the Mini-series" for his numerous roles in that genre. If Richard is the King then Jane Seymour is surely the Queen. She appeared in "The Strauss Family" (1972), "Our Mutual Friend" (1976), "Captains and the Kings" (1976), "Seventh Avenue" (1977), "The Awakening Land" (1978), "East of Eden" (1981), "Crossings" (1986) and "War and Remembrance" (1988-1989). In a similar format, Jane has also starred in far too many TV Movies to be listed here!
Unlike many series, even the supporting Cast were encouraged to submit their ideas for their characters and the scripts in general to the writers. Many of those involved in the series felt that contributed greatly to the outstanding storylines.
In another unusual move, fans of Dr. Quinn were invited to come observe filming at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills, California. During breaks the cast would even chat with fans and sign autographs!
Jane Seymour won a Golden Globe in 1996 for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series". She beat out some tough competition from Sherry Stringfield on "ER", Heather Locklear on "Melrose Place", Kathy Baker on "Picket Fences" and Gillian Anderson on "The X-Files".
Reruns of Dr. Quinn have been quite popular on cable channels since the series left CBS. They've been shown on ABC Family, the Gospel Movie Channel, the Hallmark Channel, the Inspiration Network and ION Television.
Dr. Quinn was unusual in several aspects. It was one of the last series to maintain long term ratings on a Saturday night and one of the last Western drama series on the air! It also aired in the same 8-9PM time slot for its entire six seasons on the air!
